Solar-Powered Irrigation: A Permanent Fix for Fuel Costs

How solar-powered agricultural irrigation systems work, their advantages, correct sizing, and our field experience on the Konya Plain.


Irrigation is one of the biggest cost items in agriculture. Where the grid doesn’t reach, diesel generators burn through profit; where it does, rising tariffs do the same. Solar-powered irrigation changes the picture fundamentally: your pump runs on sunshine all day, with zero fuel cost.

How does the system work?

Solar panels feed the irrigation pump directly or through a drive. A typical installation consists of:

  • Panel array: Solar panels sized to the pump’s power requirement.
  • Pump drive (inverter): Conditions the panel output to what the pump needs, adapting to irradiance changes through the day.
  • Submersible or surface pump: Selected according to well depth and required flow rate.
  • Optional tracker: Keeps panels following the sun so the pump runs at full capacity in morning and evening hours too.

Why it makes financial sense

  1. Fuel cost drops to zero: For most projects, one season’s diesel bill goes a long way toward amortising the system within a few years.
  2. Grid independence: No waiting for a transformer or paying for a line extension; the system generates its own energy.
  3. Low maintenance: Compared with a generator there are few moving parts — no oil changes, filters or breakdown headaches.
  4. Generation matches the season: The summer months when water demand peaks are exactly when solar output peaks.

On the systems we’ve installed across the Konya Plain, the first question farmers ask is always the same: “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Why sizing is critical

An undersized system won’t deliver enough water; an oversized one wastes investment. Correct design weighs well depth (dynamic level), daily water demand, irrigation method (drip, sprinkler, flood) and site conditions together. During the survey we measure these values and design the pump–panel–drive combination accordingly.

Government incentives

Solar irrigation investments can qualify for periodic grant and support programmes from TKDK, KOSGEB and provincial administrations. We also prepare the project design and technical reports required for applications.
